Deb Haaland thinks that the policies of President Trump’s administration are racist and sexist. She does not believe that they are in the interests of ordinary Americans. She wants to take a stand against them in Congress and be an outspoken voice for women and Native Americans. Though her explicit left-wing views are not uncontroversial within her own Democratic Party, she has good chances of winning the state of New Mexico. A Report by Clare Richardson.

Denis Mukwege has saved tens of thousands of women’s lives. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The Congolese doctor has taken his fight against sexual violence into the political arena. This film looks at Denis Mukwege’s impressive life and work.

Sexual violence against women has long been used as a weapon of war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Denis Mukwege founded the Panzi Hospital in Bukavu in 1999 to provide the victims of sexual violence with medical, psychological and emotional support. In addition to his work as a doctor, Dr. Mukwege is also committed to human rights and tries to raise worldwide awareness of the issue of sexual violence in his country, condemning political restraint in naming and shaming the perpetrators.
In 2012, gunmen broke into Mukwege’s house. Although he and his family survived the attack, his guard was killed and now he lives under the protection of United Nations peacekeepers in his hospital in Bukavu. The women whose physical and emotional integrity and dignity he is committed to restoring are standing by him: activists for peace and the struggle for justice in their country.

Donata is one of many thousands of middle-aged Polish women who work in Germany’s care industry. They travel to and fro between their work in Germany and their family in Poland.

The routine goes like this: Donata looks after the 80-year-old dementia patient Adolf Faulhammer in Baden-Württemberg for two to three months 24/7. Then she gets on the bus and travels for 16 hours to Czestochowa, not far from Krakow, where her husband and 19-year-old son await. She immediately takes over from her son and starts looking after her husband, who also needs intensive care. Non-stop caring in two countries. A report by Almut Maria Röhrl.

Anouk Schmitt is only 24 years old. But a serious illness paralyzed both her legs and confined her to a wheelchair. An exoskeleton could help her regain some independence. Her doctors agree the walking robot could even contribute to slowing muscle loss and stabilizing her circulation. One hundred years have passed since the end of World War I. To keep the memory of it alive, young people can volunteer for what's known as the Peace Service. DW followed a group of high-school students from Kassel who took part.

The World War I project will keep the students busy for one year. Rebecca Böhmer and Christoph Sentis are two high school students from Kassel who have volunteered to research the story of a soldier, who used to go to their school before becoming a soldier and falling in the war.

A highlight of the project will be the "Last Post" ceremony in Ypres, where the two Germans will meet students from other European countries. The teenagers have learned to understand why Germans refer to World War I as the "Urkatastrophe," meaning original catastrophe, and why the president of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said: "Whoever doubts Europe, whoever despairs of Europe, should visit its military cemeteries."

Norway extended compulsory military service to women in summer 2016. Women currently make up about ten percent of the Norwegian Armed Forces. All medically fit women aged between 19 and 44 years will be obliged to complete at least 19 months of military service.

Will space travel to Mars be possible in the future? Astronaut Thomas Pesquet hopes to be part of a crew lifting off to the red planet. [Online until: January 22, 2019]

French astronaut Thomas Pesquet spent six and a half months on the International Space Station ISS, which brings together researchers from all over the world. He conducted experiments in space to find out more about the potential of human spaceflight. Could we really send people to Mars? Thomas Pesquet was part of the crew of the ISS expedition 50/51 and spent 196 days on board the International Space Station (ISS). The astronauts were preparing for the moment mankind leaves its home to explore other celestial bodies like Mars, or the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. The journey would lead through the most hostile environment of all: the vacuum of space. In the documentary, Thomas Pesquet describes the everyday challenges that await space travelers in their search for new worlds. Half of the experiments carried out on board the ISS have to do with human survival in space. On the ground, meanwhile, research laboratories around the world are dealing with the physiological problems associated with life in zero gravity, and space agencies are conducting isolation experiments under realistic conditions to find out what qualities astronauts need. Even the best-prepared missions can be jeopardized by the psychological problems that are inevitable during very long flights. Europeans, Russians and Americans are also working together on the technical aspects of interplanetary travel. Improving spacecraft propulsion, recycling waste, protecting astronauts from cosmic rays, developing ergonomic space suits and human-robot interfaces are just some of the issues being investigated on the ISS.

Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey: tourists to these countries are often targeted by terrorists. A climate of fear prevails and holidaymakers are staying away.

Attacks on foreign tourists set off a disastrous chain reaction: first they bring fear, then the tourists stay away and the economy takes a nosedive, leading to job losses and more radicalization.
Tourism sectors in countries such as Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey have traditionally provided unskilled workers with jobs that allow them to feed their families. But with fears of terrorism affecting visitor numbers to Muslim countries, more and more people are unemployed and becoming desperate, with state help almost non-existent.

We look at the dire social situation in these countries, and examine the impact of anti-terrorism policies there. Tunisia’s fledgling democracy is increasingly clamping down on returnees from IS regions and tightening its security, while Egypt's military regime is pursuing a much stricter security regime and using widespread surveillance. Turkey, meanwhile, is using the fight against terrorists as a pretext to step up authoritarian controls.

Meet people who are desperately hoping the tourists will return, politicians, terrorists, journalists and civil rights activists.
