What Are Ways You Can Correct An Overbite?
An overbite is a problem experienced by 7 out of 10 children in the United States today--a staggering statistic--and one that continues to grow. There are a number of reasons that children and young adults suffer from an overbite; genetics, habit and improper alignment of their teeth being the most common. The good news is that there are multiple ways that dentists, orthodontists and oral surgeons can correct an overbite today, and none of them include the oversized and ugly head appliances that we have all seen in pictures and heard horror stories of from the past. In most cases, for a minor overbite, braces or Invisalign retainers work great to get the teeth back in line where they belong. In case those options do not work, there is always surgery. What is An Overbite?
Overbites come in four different general types: horizontal and vertical overbites, and dental and skeletal overbites. Generally, a overbite due to irregular teeth spacing is considered a dental overbite and can be easily corrected with braces; however, a skeletal overbite happens when the jaw placement is not exactly where it should be and generally requires surgical intervention in order to solve this particular type of overbite.
Causes of Overbite
The two key causes of an overbite condition consist of heredity and habits; heredity being the passing along of different skeletal or jaw growth structures from parents to children in a way that the children have the same types of difficulties with their overbite that parents had with theirs. Habits consist of learned behaviors that, if halted, can halt the damage to the mouth structure and allow it to be rebuilt in a way that will remove the overbite problem. Habit issues include things like thumb-sucking, pencil or eraser biting, using a pacifier past the age of around 2 years old and other things as well such as tongue-thrusting and nail biting.
Overbite Solutions: Braces
Traditional braces are still one of the best solutions to dental overbite there is--they are relatively cost-effective, and while you may have to wear them for a significant period of time, up to two years or more, they do provide a pretty lasting solution to your overbite problem. You may or may not have to wear elastic bands with your braces, but you are likely to have to visit your orthodontist every 4-6 weeks in order to have your braces tightened to keep your teeth moving in the proper direction.
Overbite Solution: Forsus Springs
Forsus Springs are a relatively new way of treating overbites, and were created with the sole purpose of reducing or eliminating the need for children to wear bulky headgear in order to get rid of their pesky overbite problem. This spring-based appliance is actually worn inside the mouth so essentially the only thing that you see are braces from the smile. The Forsus Spring is applied on the side of the braces, and essentially pulls the top jaw back while helping to leverage the bottom jaw slightly forward, correcting the overbite from both directions. These inter-arch springs are applied to both top and bottom jaws in order to allow relatively normal movements of the patient’s mouth so it can be well-tolerated.
Overbite Solution: Surgery
Overbite surgery can be quite invasive, painful and have a significant recovery time, but if your jaws are severely misaligned, it may be the only valid treatment for you. That said, jaw surgery is relatively straightforward and well-understood, and offers a very permanent solution to the difficulty of your overbite.
